The story of Bob and Amy started on a breezy long weekend in September of 2011.
Bob had decided to go camping (as he had been doing for the past 20 years) at Camp Klahanie. He was there with his family and friends enjoying his favourite activities like playing guitar around the campground, cooking over the fire, swimming and sleeping.
Amy for her part was off to camp Klahanie to join her friend Mindy at her trailer. The truth is, Amy did not even want to go camping that weekend. She was about to start a new job at a new school and just wanted to rest and relax at home. Luckily, Amy has excellent friends like Mindy who would not let her use such a lame excuse to get out of hanging by the lake. So, Amy packed her bags and arrived at casa de Mindy’s lovely trailer. Now, Mindy at this time was 9 months pregnant and due to give birth at any time, so Amy realized that this visit was going to be nice and low key. Amy was so relaxed that she packed no make up and brought all of her grungiest camp-style clothing!
So, the weekend commenced…… Friday during the day, Amy and Mindy were walking to the beach to go swimming. As they were walking by, a man named Curtis decided it was a great idea to call out to Amy and inform her that she looked great in her bikini. Well, suffice it to say, things didn’t work out for poor Curtis. Amy chatted with the emphatic man and continued on her way a short time later. She did notice at this time that there was a man with a guitar in the background observing this interaction but decided she had had enough with this group and went to hang out at the beach.
Later on that evening, the campground decided to play matchmaker. Mindy, knowing that Amy was single, told pretty much everyone that ‘Amy was looking for a boyfriend’! Amy did not know that Mindy had done this and pretty soon she was approached by a mutual friend to Bob and Amy to inform her that there was a lovely gentleman named Bob who was also single. Amy thought, “I guess I will see what this fella is all about”, though she really just wanted to hang out with Mindy and not bother.
Unfortunately, Bob and Amy’s first encounter did not go so smoothly. Mindy and Amy arrived at the same campfire as Bob only to discover that this man has a terrible taste in music! Amy was not impressed with the litany of Jack Black tunes that Bob was singing to the crowd. Worst of all, it appeared to Amy that he did NOT like country music at all. This rock and roll man just seemed too different AND he barely paid attention to Amy the entire night. Amy was beginning to wonder what people were playing at. So, the night ended without much fanfare and Amy chalked it up to matchmakers not knowing what they were doing.
The next day, Saturday, was the horseshoe tournament at the park (an annual event). Amy and Mindy decided to go up the hill and check out the game as Mindy’s dad was playing in the tournament. It turns out Bob was playing too. By chance, it started to rain and Amy and Bob found shelter under the same spot. Amy decided she better try to talk to this man because they didn’t really connect the night before and she was beginning to feel bad for not really giving him a chance. This conversation also didn’t go so well unfortunately. Bob is super quiet when he first meets people (or maybe a girl he is interested in!), so the pair awkwardly stood beside each other and watched the rain without speaking more than 10 words to each other. Ultimately, Amy thought that this was too bad because he was kinda cute (now that she could see him in the daylight). She assumed because he ignored her the night before and again he was barely talking to her, that he must not be that into her. Amy was not fully deterred though because everyone in the campground kept going on and on about how great this guy was. She figured she’d see him again that night at the bonfire/dance, held annually during the long weekend festivities, and have a go at a real deal conversation so she could put this whole thing to rest one way or another.
Mindy and Amy arrived at the dance as it was just getting going. Sitting alone on a picnic table with his guitar was Bob. He had a different look about him that night. He was earnestly looking in Amy’s direction and not diverting eye contact as he had before. She spoke quickly with Mindy and explained that she was going over to speak to Bob, as it appeared that Bob wanted to chat with her.
They said hello again. Bob asked Amy if she liked music. Amy took a few moments and finally blurted out that she was obsessed with country music and the cowboys that led her to this wonderful genre of music. Bob took that news very well and Amy passed the musical test that she didn’t know was happening. They stayed up late that night talking and getting to know all of the things you need to know about a person you just met.
Bob and Amy planned to do the same thing on Sunday but realized that this was the day Amy planned to leave Klahanie. You see, Mindy (her friend with the trailer) was due to deliver her baby any moment, so the plan always was to head back early in case her daughter decided to arrive. Mindy being the most excellent and laid back friend ever, told them both that waiting to go home Monday was fine. So, Bob and Amy had another wonderful day together hanging out and catching up on the three decades they missed together.
Of course the story ends well with more conversations and a life of happiness awaiting them. Mindy’s baby decided she wanted to start getting born on Tuesday. I want to give another shout out to Grace and thank her for staying inside mommy for one more day! This ends the wonderfully random meeting of Bob and Amy. They are both really excited for the wonderfully random things to greet them in their future together.
